Comic Relief - A Japanese theatre troupe tickles your funny bone with traditional comic tales
Around the world in ten minutes, "katsura Kaishi, a Japanese artiste promised scores of young children from Sanskriti School where he performed on Friday afternoon. Much to their delight, Kaishi fished out a traditional Japanese bamboo blind and morphed it into various shapes of famouse architectural landmarks. On an imaginary trip to England, the kids got to see the London Bridge and, when in Pris, they cheered at the sight of the Eiffel Tower. The Indian visit left the audience slightly perplexed though, for while most people expected to see the Taj Mahal, all they got was an angler who had hooked a giant fish!
Rakugo is an ancient Japanese art from that this troupe is trying to popularise around the globe. "This art form dates back three hundred years," says Kimie Oshima, the show's producer. "It started with Buddhist priests who were preaching to the masses. They realised that to hold the people's attention they needed to liven things up. That's when things turned theatrical," she laughs. So each of the tales carries a moral, "rather like an Aesop's fable," says Oshima.
The five Rakugo performers are on their fist visit to India. "While in the West you've got stand-up comedy, ours is better described as sit-down comic story telling. That's because we sit down on our knees on a cushion and act out our stories," Oshima says.
Oshima also teaches sociolinguistics at Bunkyou Gakuin University in Tokyo organises a foreign trip for her troup every year. "We've taken our mono-acts to Canada, the US and Norway," she says.
The Rakugo will be staged at Abhimanch National School of Drama on September 3 at 7pm.

Japanese sit-down comedy 'Rakugo' gets crowd going
A hilarious Japanese sit-down comedy, 'Rakugo' which was presented in English entertained students and other members of the public Wednesday afternoon at the Centrepoint Hotel in Gadong. More than 600 students from around 10 schools nationwide attended the special one-day performance.
It was evident that the five Japanese performers - Kimie Oshima, Katsura Kaishi, Katsura Asakichi, Ogawa Yukie and Hayashiya Kazume - did indeed put on a great show as the audience spent the afternoon laughing.
Rakugo is a unique form of storytelling which includes comedy and play. It is also a traditional form of performing art, dating back to the end of the 17th century, Rakugo is best described as Japanese sit-down comedy, where the performer wears traditional Japanese clothing (kimono) and kneels throughout teh performance.
The performer acts out the whole story alone, playing the part of several characters and switching from one distinct character to another by changing voice, facial expressions and manners. The performer would only use simple and small props such as a traditional Japanese fan.
Since 1998, this very popular Rakugo troupe has performed on more than 180 stages in nine countries including Europe, North America, Oceania and Asia. The performance in Brunei included a musical interlude, Rakugo "The Haunted Plate House" by Oshima Kimie, Rakugo "A Man in a Hurry" by Katsura Kaishi, Japanese magic shows and others. Thsi year, the Rakugo show was organised by the Embassy of Japan in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Brunei gets taste of Japanese sit-down comedy - Rakugo
A Japanese cultural showcase was recently launched at the Goldstone Ballroom of Centrepoint Hotel in Gadong. It was organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports with assistance from Embassy of Japan and funded by the Japan Foundation.
Present as guest of honour during the launching was Pehin Major General (R) Dato Awg Hj Mohammad bin Hj Daud, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. The cultural identity of the Rakugo in Japan is similar to the Western version of stand-up comedy with only one difference - the Japanese version is performed whilst sitting down. The kimono-clad hilarious presentation of Rakugo was done in English and the group has been touring the world over.
The five-member group presented humorous ever-green jokes that date as far back as the 17th century. The Rakugo in actual fact is a combination of story telling, hilarious miming, singing, voice changing and expressing through facial mimicry. The storyteller performs various characters in one sitting of story. The props used are the Sense (fan) and the Tenugui (hand towel). The musical equipments used also highlight the up and down moods. Apart from the story telling, there were also magic shows.
